Winston Smith was an American carpenter aboard the Obra Dinn during its voyage in 1802. He was speared multiple times by a crab rider and managed to kill it, before dying of his wounds.

Story[]

Smith was a carpenter assisted by a fellow American, Marcus Gibbs. He was first seen witnessing the execution of Hok-Seng Lau, alongside his assistant.[1] He and Gibbs later retrieved the body of William Wasim, a seaman who fell down a flight of stairs to his death.[2]

After failing to dissuade Gibbs from attacking a crab rider, an attempt that cost Gibbs his life, Smith was struck in the shoulder with a spike. He survived, thanks to the help of seaman Nathan Peters pulling him behind cover. He later retrieved a hand mortar from the ship's bosun, Alfred Klestil, appearing determined to get revenge for the death of his mate.[3]

He was last seen fighting the last crab rider in the cargo hold. He was speared multiple times by the beast, but he managed to use his dying breath to kill it with the hand mortar.

The East India Company insurance assessment on the Obra Dinn incident found extraordinary valor in Smith's actions. His estate was awarded £60 in outstanding wages and reward.[4]

Identification[]

Smith can be identified as a carpenter or carpenter's mate in Unholy Captives, part 3 when he steps out of the carpenter's workshop to investigate the commotion. In Soldiers of the Sea, part 3, Gibbs addresses Smith as boss before throwing his axe at the crab rider, making it clear that Smith is the carpenter.
