Return of the Obra Dinn Wiki

Soldiers of the Sea, part 7 is the seventh part of chapter VI in the plot of Return of the Obra Dinn. It reveals the fate of Ship's Steward Zungi Sathi.

As Sathi retreats to the port walk, another crab rider invades the orlop deck and is headed to the lazarette. When First Mate William Hoscut orders someone to shoot the crab rider, Bosun's Mate Charles Miner shoots at it, but he misses and accidentally hits Sathi, hiding behind the wall.

The pocketwatch starts shaking after viewing this diorama, allowing access to Soldiers of the Sea, part 6.

Things of interest

Wounded Ship's Steward Zungi Sathi gets shot accidentally.

  • The identity of Ship's Steward Zungi Sathi can only be deduced by ruling out all other options or by associating his darker skin with his Indian origin. His clothing reveals he is a steward and there is only one Indian steward on board.
    • It is easy to mistakenly deduce that his fate is being spiked by a terrible beast, based on the (chronologically) immediately preceding parts. The explosion at his chest in his death scene could be rationalized as a gush of blood from pulling a spike out. However, the biggest clue against this is that Sathi had only one spike embedded in him, which he had pulled out near the entrance to the port walk, as it can be seen lying on the ground in part 6. The clues for his real cause of death are obscured:
      • In the room next door, Charles Miner (who cannot be highlighted, and must be identified based on visuals) can be seen having fired a round into the crab rider and in the general direction of Sathi. However, the debris and viewing angle make it hard to see the bullet's exact path, and Sathi leaning against the wall also conceals the bullet's path through the wall and into him.
      • In retrospect, the transcript is a further clue, or at least a hint to notice the gun in the other room. However, the speech can also be interpreted as coincidental background noise, and the sound effects are up to interpretation.
      • In the real Obra Dinn, a small bullet hole can be seen in the wall. However, it may be easily missed or mistaken for a generic defect.
  • Purser Duncan McKay's identity can be assumed as he is hiding in the purser's office.
  • Given that this is the third unlikely-seeming death (after those of William Wasim and Huang Li) after three mermaids were brought aboard, it may imply that the curse Fillip Dahl and the Formosans talk of is real.

Where

This memory is accessed via a body at the end of the port walk on the orlop deck.

Areas
