Nicholas Botterill was an English topman who served aboard the Obra Dinn during her last voyage in 1802. He died when he was speared by a crab-rider in Soldiers of the Sea, part 2. It is possible that he has a voice actor who goes uncredited.

Botterill was a topman and could be seen hanging around the ship's rigging.[1]

He was the first victim of the crab riders. One of them speared him as soon as it stepped on board.

After the insurance assessment on the Obra Dinn incident, the East India Company awarded Botterill's estate £25 in outstanding wages.[2]

Botterill can be identified in Soldiers of the Sea, part 3. In it, seaman Nathan Peters attempts to dissuade carpenter's mate Marcus Gibbs, saying that "it's already done for Nick". Since Botterill is the only Nick or Nicholas on board, this comment identifies him.

Botterill appears only in four dioramas, as well as the Under Way sketch.

  1. In Soldiers of the Sea, part 1 and Soldiers of the Sea, part 2.
  2. Stated in the insurance assessment book in the epilogue if Botterill's fate is deduced correctly.
