Jane Bird was an English passenger aboard the Obra Dinn during its last voyage in 1802. She was one of the survivors living in Morocco.
Story and fate[]
Bird was first seen witnessing a fellow passenger, Abigail Hoscut Witterel, getting crushed by some rigging when a kraken attacked the Obra Dinn.[1]
After surviving the kraken attack, she, together with surgeon Henry Evans, fellow passenger Emily Jackson, and Fourth Mate's Steward Davey James, boarded a lifeboat[2] and left the ship. The lifeboat successfully reached Africa, where the survivors continued to live in Morocco.[3]
The East India Company insurance assessment on the Obra Dinn incident found out that Bird had abandoned the crew and the vessel. Her estate was fined £10.[4]
Jane Bird's letter[]

A year after the inspector visited the Obra Dinn, Jane Bird wrote to them to inform them of the death of Henry Evans. The exact contents of the letter depend on how many fates the inspector solved:
With only a few fates solved, surgeon Henry Evans was not particularly impressed by the performance of the inspector, as per Jane Bird.
- All 58 fates solved: The letter will say that Evans died satisfied with the inspector's efforts and that his gratitude be expressed by returning the book to the inspector, along with an object necessary to access chapter VIII, Bargain. She asks the inspector to not write back, as the memory of the voyage is painful to her, James, and Jackson.
- 30–56 fates solved: Her letter will say that, although the book is not fully solved, Evans appreciates the attempt, acknowledging the difficulty of the task. She adds that she, James, and Jackson are content living in Morocco and asks the inspector to not write back.
- 27 or fewer fates solved: Bird's letter will say that the book is so incomplete it disheartened Evans to the point of worsening his health. He used his final moments to express his regrets entrusting the inspector with the task.
Identification[]
Jane Bird can be identified after The Doom, part 8. This part identifies Abigail Hoscut Witterel and with that, there are only three women left on board. Since one is Formosan, only Bird and Jackson have to be separated. Bird is listed in the crew manifest as "Miss Jane Bird", meaning that she is unmarried. In The Doom, part 8, the three women come on deck and it can be seen that, apart from Hoscut Witterel, only one is wearing a wedding ring. Since this cannot be Jane Bird, she has to be the remaining European woman on board.
