Leonid Volkov was a Russian topman on the Obra Dinn during her last voyage in 1802. Passenger Emily Jackson shot and killed him as he was trying to prevent their lifeboat from leaving.

Story[]

Being a topman, Volkov was present when topman Huang Li was electrocuted by lightning in the ship's rigging.[1] Volkov was also seen below deck manning cannons as a kraken attacked the ship.[2]

Later, Volkov caught surgeon Henry Evans and his party attempting to escape using the last lifeboat. He attacked and killed First Mate's Steward Paul Moss in a sword fight, despite Captain Robert Witterel intervening and ordering Volkov to let the party go.[3] He attempted to attack the rest of the party, but he was promptly shot down by passenger Emily Jackson.[4] His body was then unceremoniously dumped overboard by fellow topman Lewis Walker.

The East India Company insurance assessment on the Obra Dinn incident found Volkov guilty of killing of a crewmate.[5] His estate was unknown so £15 were claimed in expenses.[6]

Identification[]

The group of three Russians among the crew can be easily identified in A Bitter Cold, part 1, where they are playing cards and speaking in Russian. Of the three, Volkov is the only topman, and Soldiers of the Sea, part 1 confirms this role by showing him high up in the rigging.

The game itself unblurs his face earlier, possibly because he can be seen sleeping alone in his #45 hammock in The Doom, part 2. By that point in the ship's journey, the other two Russians Toporov and Nikishin had already died or disappeared during their mutinous expedition back during Chapter IV.

Appearances[]

Volkov appears in 11 memories. Chronologically, his first appearance is in a Loose Cargo, part 1. Volkov is first introduced to the player in Escape, part 3.
