There are three endings that vary in the contents of the letter, the items on the Chief Inspector's bookshelf, and the maid's dialogue. The ending the player gets depends on how many people are typeset into the book.

Ending 1 (0–27 fates) Edit

Shelf 1

Chief Inspector's bookshelf with 0–27 fates solved.

The maid remarks that all the tea is gone and that maybe the inspector should go to bed. She leaves and the inspector reads the letter (for the version that appears in the game, click here):

Chief Inspector,

I write to you with the unfortunate news that Dr. Evans has passed away. He succumbed to his illness shortly after receiving your package.

Although his health was generally poor, receiving the Obra Dinn book in such an incomplete state further disheartened him so thoroughly that he was unable to recover.

He used his final moments to express the extreme regret he felt with trusting such a remarkable task to you.

We thought you should know.

Regards,

Jane Bird

Ending 2 (30–56 fates) Edit

Shelf 2-0

Chief Inspector's bookshelf with 30–56 fates solved.

The maid's dialogue is unchanged. For the letter that appears in the game, click here.

Chief Inspector,

I write to you with the unfortunate news that Dr. Evans has passed away. He succumbed to his illness shortly after receiving your package.

Although the book was not fully solved, he asked me to express his appreciation at your attempt. He understood the difficulty of the task and that his final wish to see the completed book would not come easily.

Of the four of us that survived the Obra Dinn's terrible ordeal, only three remain now.

We are content with our situation here in Morocco and request no further correspondence.

Regards,

Jane Bird

Ending 3 (all 58 solvable fates) Edit

Shelf 3

Chief Inspector's bookshelf with 58 fates solved.

The maid gives the inspector a package, advising against opening it inside as it smells just dreadful. She says that tea is in the kitchen if the inspector needs more and leaves. The package contains the hand of Henry Evans' pet monkey, the book and a letter (for the letter that appears in the game, click here).

Using the hand and the pocketwatch, chapter VIII, Bargain, can now be completed and all 60 fates typeset. After the last death scene is left, an ending sequence plays where the inspector takes the book and places it in the gap at the far left of the bookshelf, then the credits roll.

Chief Inspector,

I write to you with the unfortunate news that Dr. Evans has passed away. He succumbed to his illness shortly after receiving your package.

He was very pleased with your correspondence and asked that his gratitude be expressed by returning the book to you, along with the means to complete it.

As for the three of us that remain, the Obra Dinn is a distant memory and a dreadful chapter in our lives that we wish to forget.

Do not write back.

Regards,

Jane Bird
