Aleksei Toporov was a Russian seaman on the Obra Dinn during her last voyage in 1803. He was pulled overboard and drowned by a mermaid out on the open sea.
As an ordinary seaman, Toporov can be seen in a number of scenes, mostly in the background. He is first introduced to the player in Murder, part 2 as part of the firing line that executes Hok-Seng Lau.
He later forms part of the party around Second Mate Edward Nichols trying to steal a chest and a shell along with Formosan hostages. After Edward Nichols and his party abandoned the ship, they were attacked by sirens. Toporov was pulled overboard and drowned. His body was therefore not seen.
The East India Company insurance assessment of the Obra Dinn incident found Toporov guilty of attempted mutiny and theft of cargo. His estate was unknown, but an expense of £50 was claimed.
Toporov is part of the group of three Russian sailors playing cards in A Bitter Cold, part 1. Behind him, his numbered hammock can be seen being the only one with the tag on the left side, which enables his identification. Besides the hammock hangs his bag, containing a signature pipe that Toporov can be seen smoking in a number of memories, including The Calling, part 1 and Murder, part 3.
Toporov appears in 8 memories. Chronologically, he first appears in Loose Cargo, part 1. He perishes during the events of chapter IV. He also appears in the Justice at Sea sketch.
